How To Pick Your Theme Color When Decorating!

Have you always dreamed about having a cohesive look for your interior?

Would you like to create a flow that moves from room to room? Are you ready to give your home more character?

Here are a few tips on how to achieve that:

Pick a color from the busiest pattern or piece in your space

It could be your rug, art work, or even an upholstery pattern. Take one color from that pattern and try to repeat it multiple times in accessories and accent pieces (make sure your pieces are solid colors and have no patterns, so they don’t fight against each other). Be sure to use that color in different shades to create a fun, energetic space.

Start with decorating your formal space

Such as your entryway, living room and dining room. Choose a color scheme for those areas and try to pick your favorite color from the scheme and take all the way through the house by applying accents in your den, kitchen and bedroom.

Decorate from dark to light vertically.

Use the darkest shade for your floor or rug, your sofa in a medium shade of that color and your walls in the lightest shade.

Use the color wheel

Colors that are side by side on the color wheel, also known as “tertiary” colors, give you a relaxing feel and are used mostly in bedrooms. For example shades of blues and greens in light shades.

Colors that are across from each other on the color wheel are “complementary” colors which give you contrast and add drama to your look.

Get inspired by your clothes

People wear clothes in colors that reflect their personality and taste. You can apply that when it comes to picking out your sofa or choosing a color pallet to decorate your home.

Use natural colors for large spaces

Use natural colors for large spaces in the room, such as your walls and sofa. Allowing those spaces to work as a background for your accents. Also, this will allow you to be able to change your accent pieces/colors as often as you’d like.

Use the Rule of 60-30-10

When decorating a space, divide the colors into components of 60 percent of a dominant color (walls), 30 percent of a secondary color (upholstery) and 10 percent of an accent color (accessories).
