A Mother’s Guide to Getting the Whole Family on Board with Organizing: Six tips and tricks
Let’s be honest — no one person can (or should) manage the clutter and chaos alone. Getting the whole family involved in organizing not only lightens the load, but it also teaches responsibility and teamwork. If you’re a busy mom looking for ways to rally your household and turn organizing into a family affair, here’s how to make it happen!
1. Lead by Example
Kids and partners are more likely to get involved when they see you consistently decluttering and organizing your own spaces. Show them how it’s done by tidying your closet, sorting the pantry, or organizing the entryway. When they see the benefits, they’ll be more open to joining in.
2. Make It a Team Effort
Turn organizing into a family activity. Set a timer for 15–20 minutes and tackle a room or category together — whether it’s toys, shoes, or that overflowing kitchen drawer. Play upbeat music, and turn it into a fun, fast-paced challenge. Little victories will build momentum!
3. Give Everyone Ownership
Assign age-appropriate tasks and areas. Let the kids be in charge of organizing their toys or art supplies. Have teens sort through clothes or electronics. Spouses can take on tools, garage shelves, or digital decluttering. When everyone has a part, it builds a sense of ownership.
4. Set Clear Expectations
Decide as a family what “organized” means in your home. Create simple systems, labels, or designated spaces for common items. A shared understanding makes it easier for everyone to follow the plan — and avoids you becoming the default picker-upper.
5. Celebrate Progress
Don’t wait for perfection! Celebrate small wins, whether it’s a clutter-free counter or an organized coat closet. Acknowledge the effort and maybe even reward the family with a fun outing or movie night.
6. Make Decluttering Regular
Organizing isn’t a one-time thing — it’s a lifestyle. Set regular times for the family to check in, declutter, and reorganize together. Seasonal changes or before holidays are great natural opportunities.
When families get organized together, it reduces stress, saves time, and teaches valuable life skills. It also creates a more peaceful, welcoming home where everyone can relax and thrive.
