Preserving Peace and Calm as we Get Back to ‘Normal’

Ideal Organizing + Design would like to wish you all safety and good health as we transition to a post-pandemic normal! While enjoying more activity it is also imperative for our mental health to find ways to stay calm and reduce anxiety.

Our team at Ideal Organizing + Design recommends assigning a comfortable space in your home and setting aside time for you and each of your family members to gather thoughts, meditate and relax. This can provide a sense of peace, a sense of calm, and a place to reset mentally when returning home from a more harried and busier world.

When designing your restorative space, consider your five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Here are some examples for designing your area to invigorate your five senses and get the most out of your soothing sanctuary:

Sight – Surround yourself with earth tones, such as greens, blues, and browns. Colors that appear in nature have a natural calming effect resulting in a peaceful, relaxing mood. Include some easy-care greenery such as succulents. They have been known to improve concentration, productivity, and mood while reducing stress. Incorporate wood elements into the space to recreate the calming effects of a spa. Complete the relaxing ambiance with the warm glow that comes from using a Himalayan salt lamp.

Sound – The sounds of nature, whether direct or from a recording, can enhance the brain’s power to relax. Play soft music combined with natural sounds such as steady rain, summer crickets, or the sound of a gently flowing stream. You can even create your own recording of favorite nature sounds including birds chirping or waves from a local beach. Remember, you can also enjoy the absence of sound by sitting and enjoying the silence.

Smell – Use a lavender-scented air freshener, essential oil, or candle. The fragrance from the oils of the lavender plant is believed to help promote calmness and wellness. It is also said to help reduce stress, anxiety, and possibly even mild pain.

Touch – Make sure your space is comfortable. Incorporate soft, smooth fabrics, cozy blankets, and comfortable pillows. Consider using a weighted blanket or a massage device to reduce chronic stress and high levels of anxiety.

Taste – Order takeout for yourself and relax! Sip on hot chamomile tea. Chamomile has been used as a traditional medicine for thousands of years, to calm anxiety and settle stomachs.

When you are ready, spread your newfound love and positivity.
